An unfulfilled desire to have children is a common problem, and the causes are evenly divided between men and women. If a couple cannot have children, not only the woman but also the man should be examined
immediately. |
| In addition to a special and general history, the man will be thoroughly examined, especially the
external genitals (penis, testicles), size of testicles, presence or absence of ductus deferens, exclusion of
varicocele (varicose vein of the testicle) and ultrasound investigation of the testes. Many problems can be identified and causes excluded in this way. Measuring blood concentrations of male sex hormones can additionally help to clarify questions. The most important investigation is, however, the spermiogram, whereby ejaculate obtained by masturbation is analysed under the microscope. According to an old rule, one spermiogram is no spermiogram, which means that two should be carried out within two to three weeks of each other, to gauge male
fertility.
The aim of the treatment is the conception of a child in a natural way. If this is not possible, artificial insemination has helped many to conceive successfully.
