		The change in life, menopause, ceasing of menstruation in women; this is the period where women stop being fertile. The menopause is initiated by changes in the ovaries and glands producing sexual hormones that control the female cycle (oestrogens, mainly). In most women, oestrogen production decreases between the ages of 45 and 50. Surgical removal or other damage to the ovaries brings the menopause forward.
	Occasionally the menopause occurs problem-free. Common symptoms are hot flushes and sweats. Changes to the vaginal mucous membranes cause dryness, burning, itching, and pain during intercourse. An added danger is the development of osteoporosis. All these complaints are the result of changes to the hormonal balance and can often be treated with appropriate oestrogen therapy.
